Oil Pulling

Just very recently I did a research on natural healing and one interesting therapy which I learned is Oil Pulling...

I have mentioned this one my other site in My First Friday Fill-Ins post and many were asking what is it?! I had been meaning to make a post about it since then...so here goes!

Oil pulling which is sometimes referred to as oil swishing is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that’s becoming very popular recently for dental and gum health. It is actually considered as an alternative medicine and all mouth-related problems may benefit from it.

People may asked how this is done. It is very easy to do and very simple...and I myself have done it many times. Just follow the following steps --

Step 1:

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water) take about one tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil (in my research this two were the ones highly recommended, but I have only tried sesame oil since that's the only one available here) into your mouth. (Do not swallow it!)

Step 2:

Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing.If your jaw muscles get tired while swishing, you're putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you'll feel very comfortable and you will get used to it.

Step3:

As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, you may notice the oil/saliva mixture in your mouth has become thicker. This is expected since it is pulling out toxins from your body. After 20 minutes or so, spit out the oil into the toilet. Don't be alarmed if it looks yellowish--that is also expected.

Step4:

Rinse out your mouth a couple of times with warm water and spit into the toilet. Rinse and spit with a good mouthwash. Some recommends hydrogen peroxide diluted with water. I prefer brushing my teeth!

Very easy to do! I've done it for weeks now and it really improved my gum, my teeth and my overall oral hygiene.
